Glued to the tube..no way !

After what’ve been a grueling two weeks, finally got a day off yesterday. Not wanting to step out of the house on a dull, rainy day, I decided to catch up on some lost television action.

Excited, I perched up on the sofa with a packet of munchies in one hand and a chilled glass of lemonade in the other. As I sat flipping through the channels , to my utter disappointment , there was absolutely nothing worth watching. There are some 150 odd channels (possibly even more) and not having anything even remotely interesting to watch is a shame.

That just got me thinking about how the quality of Indian television has gone down in the last couple of years. The amount of trash churned out everyday is incredible.

Cliched, exaggerated sagas of love, deceit and revenge are aired continually on various TV channels. Every woman in these serials is classified as either a paragon of virtue or the proverbial bitch, who is forever hatching criminal plots against her in-laws.I find it hard to accept that millions of eyeballs are being exposed to such regressive programmes day after day. Also, hats off to these channels for coming up with the most bizarre and downright ludicrous concepts for these so-called reality shows!

NDTV Good Times and Discovery Travel and Living are the two channels that have got some very entertaining and informative programmes. They air shows which cover a myriad of topics ranging from travelling to art to health to mindful entertainment.

Also, thank god for Star World which has got a couple of interesting serials like ‘The Practice’, ‘Two and a half men’ , ‘lost’.It just makes you realize how progressive and realistic western television is, compared to ours. Talking about progressive, some serials like ‘Nip/Tuck’, ‘The L word’,'Modern Family’ are a great watch. But the chances of them ever being shown on the Indian screen are very slim, as they will never fit into the ‘Indian stereotype’.Sigh…

After a good hour and a half of dilly-dallying, finally stumbled onto zee studio where they were showing re-runs of Grey’s anatomy. Was so relieved, atleast I had something to keep myself occupied for the next 3-4 hours !
