Remembering Malgudi Days..

Does this picture invoke strong memories in you? Chances are high, that it might if you’ve probably grown up in the eighties. Yes, it is R.K. Narayan’s Malgudi Days.

Switching from one channel to the other hoping to find something interesting to watch, I stumbled onto Doordarshan this afternoon, just to find my once upon a time favorite ‘Malgudi days’ on.

I was delighted beyond imagination!

How can anyone forget the quintessential ‘Ta-na-na-ta-na-na-nah’ title track playing in the background as we are presented with visuals of a small, sleepy town of Malgudi ? Or for that matter R.K. Narayan’s compelling story-telling, or cute little Swami’s histrionics?

My personal favorite was ‘The Vendor of Sweets’ with Anant Nag, displaying his exemplary acting skills as the ‘Mithaiwala’.

A storyteller par excellence, R.K Narayan has effortlessly managed to create potraits of everyday life. There is nothing formulaic about them. Each story stands on its own, and while they are not linked, in today’s fashionable parlance, they are inherently intertwined while remaining independent from each other.

It is indeed, disheartening that such programmes are no longer made these days!

A day spent watching ‘Malgudi Days’ brought back the sweet memories of my childhood. Nostalgia on a Sunday afternoon!

It can’t get any better than this!
